Global health and wellness trends in 2022 will focus on the healing of mind, body and soul. While this is by no means a new concept, we are being encouraged to commit more deeply to the well-being of ourselves as a whole, while also considering the bigger picture – our body’s biomes, the communities we move in and the world we inhabit.

As we spend more time online – for work, enjoyment, playing our favorite online casino games and staying connected to friends and family – we are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of screen time on our bodies and minds. According to a McKinsey report, the key factors most in demand in the health and wellness market are better health, fitness, nutrition, appearance, sleep and mindfulness.

We’re taking a quick look at what you can expect to see in the health and wellness space in the next 12 months. How many of them would appeal to you?

Regenerative travel

While in the past the emphasis was ticking off bucket-list destinations and having a good time, since the pandemic we’ve started looking at travel in a different light. One of the biggest emerging wellness trends is regenerative travel, which involves an element of giving back to the systems and communities that make it possible for us to enjoy our travel experiences.

In the coming months, the concepts of sustainability and eco-friendly practices will progress a step or two further. We’ll see hotels and spas actively facilitating change in nature and their surrounding communities through social, environmental and economic wealth creation.

The healing spa experience

Current trends in the spa industry are moving away from simply improving the appearance and leaning into health and healing with an emphasis on personalized treatments.

Spas are employing more experts – osteopaths, physiotherapists and deep-tissue therapists to heal the body; and naturopaths, relaxologists and psychologists to address customers’ concerns that include stress management, vitality, optimal sleep, mindfulness and emotional balance. There will also be an increasing emphasis on diagnostics and wellness and treatment programs designed for the individual.

If you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas, be sure to check out the spa and wellness experiences that are available, because it might affect how you wish to spend your time! Meanwhile, over in Macau – the autonomous region of China known for its grand casinos and nightlife – both MGM Cotai and MGM Macau now offer customers tailor-made treatments designed by expertly trained therapists who can facilitate the healing of the mind, body and soul. Visitors can opt for spa day packages or once-off bespoke treatments at the hotels’ exceptional Tria spa facilities, which have been awarded a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for two years in a row.

Hotel wellness sanctuaries

One of the biggest takeaways from the pandemic is more awareness around the air we breathe, the quality of our environment and how this affects our immunity. One of the strongest wellness trends in 2022 will be creating healthier spaces, whether you’re enjoying casino table games at a resort or spending time in a hotel room.

The MGM Grand in Las Vegas has Stay Well Rooms and Suites that have been designed to renew, recharge and refresh visitors to the resort. These innovative spaces combine the latest wellness technologies from Delos, the Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Deepak Chopra. They include circadian lighting, which allows each visitor to personalize their room lighting to enhance sleep, energy and productivity. There is also specialized lighting to suppress melatonin and reduce jet lag, along with long-wave night lighting to minimize sleep disruption. The showers in each room and suite are fitted with infusers that reduce chlorine for better hair and skin health, while air-purification systems use natural aromatherapy oils to create a calm, mood-enhancing environment.

Recognizing that animal companions play an important role in reducing anxiety, relieving stress and even improving the immune system, the MGM Grand offers dog-friendly rooms that let visitors enjoy their stay without having to leave their companions behind. The resort has taken care of business by creating a designated outdoor dog park on the property, a delicious menu showcasing canine cuisine, and the hotel’s concierge staff can rustle up a carefully selected dog walker or sitter, if required.

Nature as healer

We’ve known for a long time that taking a jog in the great outdoors has more benefits for the body than running on a treadmill. While the wellness industry has for years been using more botanicals in beauty products and creating “urban oasis”-type amenities, current trends in the spa industry are taking therapies out of doors. Nature experiences and discovery excursions will be offered alongside body massages and personalized facials, with an emphasis on improving mood and reducing the body’s stress responses.

The phenomenon of the “sanity walk” started in 2020 during the pandemic when we were under lockdown and people were desperate to get out of doors, and it is fast growing into one of the hottest health and wellness trends – the “silly little walk” which encourages individuals to take an outdoor walk or stroll that has no purpose or direction, and never has an errand attached to it. A Rockport survey has 53% of us walking one to five miles more each day compared to pre-pandemic statistics.

DNA wellness mapping

DNA mapping techniques, which uncover health risks that allow us to make lifestyle changes and make strategic decisions for better health, are gaining in popularity. We’re realizing that health and well-being are deeply personal to each individual, and making even small alterations to our lives can have a profound effect on our longevity, if we know exactly where to make them.

Smart supplements are just one area that is being increasingly informed by DNA analysis. Instead of taking an A-Z vitamin supplement and hoping it delivers as many nutrients as possible, smart vitamins support the body only where needed so you can be sure you’re treating deficiencies or areas of concern without overburdening the body with a surplus of supplements that it doesn’t need.

Mindful, plant-based eating

Plant-based eating has been around for millennia and there are many reasons for choosing this way of life – from a desire to improve the welfare of other species, to cleaner health and more eco-friendly and sustainable environmental practices.

One of the reasons this wellness trend has entered the mainstream in recent years is awareness of the issues involved, as well as scientific evidence that supports the positive impact on our health of a plant-based diet.

A newer field of study in the West, but one that has been practiced for centuries in the East, is the use of adaptogens (plant-based substances that can stabilize physical, chemical or mental processes like stress or sleep disturbances.) Adaptogens such as ginseng, reishi or ashwagandha will take the lead in the revival of plant medicine.
