The result? A coastal Maine town takes the crown – while some of America’s most famous fall destinations don’t even make the top 10.

1. Bar Harbor, Maine
Coastal resort town Bar Harbor takes the top spot with a Cozy Fall Score of 66.9/100, combining some of the strongest seasonal conditions in the study with everything needed for a classic fall backdrop.
Its 52°F average fall temperature sits just one degree from the study’s ideal sweater-weather temperature, while 16 inches of seasonal rainfall is the highest of all 20 destinations analyzed. October also brings shorter days here, averaging just 10 hours and 21 minutes of daylight.
Foliage remains highly vibrant throughout much of October before reaching peak color around October 21 this year, while up to 15 coffee shops, cafes, and bakeries, two bookstores, parks, and a farmers market offer plenty to do when temperatures (or the rain) begin to fall.
2. Lake Placid, New York
The alpine village of Lake Placid ranks second with a score of 63.3/100, pairing classic Adirondack scenery with crisp fall conditions and a small but fitting selection of cozy amenities. The village averages a chilly 45°F throughout fall, alongside a moderate 11 inches of seasonal rainfall.
It’s also the best destination in the ranking for an early fall getaway, with foliage forecast to reach peak vibrancy around October 6 – the earliest of all 20 destinations analyzed. Those waiting until later in October will likely find the leaves already past their most colorful.
With a population of just over 2,000, Lake Placid naturally has fewer amenities than larger destinations, but that’s arguably part of its quaint appeal. Visitors can explore eight public parks covering around 15 acres, five main coffee shops, a farmers market, and an independent bookstore, offering all the essentials for a relaxed, small-town fall escape, not to mention the lake.
3. Galena, Illinois
This historic northwest small town, Galena, takes third place with a score of 62.7/100, offering some of the study’s most well-rounded conditions for a classic late-October fall getaway.
The Illinois city averages 50°F throughout fall – just three degrees from the study’s ideal 53°F sweater-weather temperature – alongside a moderate 10 inches of seasonal rainfall. October days average 10 hours and 28 minutes of daylight, bringing earlier evenings as the season progresses.
Galena is particularly well timed for travelers planning a trip towards the end of October. Foliage gradually builds in vibrancy throughout the month before reaching peak color around October 24, just one week before Halloween.
And while Galena is home to just over 2,900 people, its small size doesn’t mean sacrificing the fall experience. Visitors can still enjoy fall amenities during their trip.
4. Mystic, Connecticut
Mystic ranks fourth with a score of 58.7/100, performing particularly well for its above-average fall rainfall, near-ideal sweater-weather temperatures, abundance of pumpkin patches, and late-season foliage.
Unlike destinations that reach peak color early in October, Mystic isn’t expected to reach peak vibrancy until November 3, giving travelers the chance to extend the cozy season beyond Halloween.
Despite its population of just over 4,400, the destination offers many hallmarks of a classic fall getaway, including six pumpkin patches and two major farmers’ markets, along with local bookstores and parks.
5. Traverse City, Michigan
Rounding out the top five is Traverse City, Michigan, with a score of 58.1/100.
Its foliage is forecast to reach peak color around October 27, making Traverse City one of the strongest options for travelers planning a late-October trip.
Traverse City is the most populated autumn destination with over 150,000 people calling this city home. Two of its seasonal statistics match two other cities, with a third metric falling just behind two other towns. However, when it comes to other classic autumn markers, you can expect four to six pumpkin matches, two major farmers’ markets, as well as other seasonal activities to get involved in and venues to visit.
Where will fall foliage peak around Halloween?
For travelers hoping to combine Halloween celebrations with peak fall color, six destinations stand out.
Of the 20 popular fall getaways analyzed, six are forecast to reach peak foliage within five days of Halloween:
- Denver, Colorado – October 26
- Traverse City, Michigan – October 27
- Leavenworth, Washington – October 28
- Woodstock, Vermont – October 28
- Salem, Massachusetts – October 30
- Asheville, North Carolina – October 30
Salem and Asheville could offer particularly well-timed Halloween getaways, with both expected to reach peak color on October 30 – just one day before Halloween.
Meanwhile, travelers heading to destinations such as Bar Harbor and Lake Placid for Halloween will have missed their forecast peak, making the final week of October a particularly important consideration when choosing where to travel.
Methodology
BetMGM Casino analyzed 20 U.S. destinations commonly recommended across editorial roundups for fall getaways, ranking each across two categories: fall conditions (70% of the final score) and cozy amenities (30% of the final score).
Fall conditions were scored based on four factors:
- Foliage vibrancy: Brighter, more vibrant foliage across the fall season was rewarded with a higher score.
- Fall rainfall: Destinations with higher average rainfall totals scored more favorably, reflecting the study’s definition of rainy weather as part of a cozy fall atmosphere.
- Sweater-weather temperature: 53°F was set as the ideal fall temperature, with destinations closest to this temperature receiving the highest scores. Scores decreased the further temperatures fell above or below 53°F.
- October daylight: Shorter average daylight hours were rewarded with higher scores, reflecting the earlier evenings associated with fall.
Cozy amenities are considered the number of coffee shops, bookstores, farmers’ markets, pumpkin patches, and parks available in each destination based on information obtained from local secondary sources. As the locations analyzed vary significantly in population, amenity counts were calculated per 10,000 residents, with greater availability per capita receiving a higher score.
Each metric was normalized on a 0-100 scale before the relevant weightings were applied and combined to produce the final Cozy Fall Score out of 100.
Data was collected in August 2026 using sources including NOAA, the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), Time and Date, the 2026 Explore Fall Foliage Map, Google Maps, Yelp, and Tripadvisor.
Peak foliage dates are forecasts and may shift depending on temperatures, rainfall, and other weather conditions throughout the season.
