Methodology
To find out which horror villains haunt America’s streets, researchers at BetMGM Casino turned to OpenStreetMap data using Overpass Turbo. This tool allows users to search through street and road names across the U.S.
Focusing on a list of 13 famous horror icons, we ran a custom query for each state that scanned every street name to see if it matched one of these characters. The data was downloaded and analyzed, giving us a count of how many times each character appeared on street signs in every state.
Once we had the data, we compared the results to assess the following:
- Which character was most common in each state
- Which villain came out on top nationwide
- How characters are spread across different regions of the country
This process gave us a spooky snapshot of how horror icons have made their way into America’s geography, just in time for Halloween.
