With spring break and summer on the horizon, Pennsylvanians are weighing up where to spend their leisure time, and perhaps more importantly, their money. Whether that means travelling, seeking out entertainment, or simply finding new experiences closer to home.

To better understand these plans, BetMGM Casino surveyed 1,000 Pennsylvania residents to learn more about their travel preferences, spending habits, and what ultimately shapes their decisions to stay in-state or travel elsewhere with their time off.

As a leading online gambling and entertainment operator in Pennsylvania, BetMGM Casino has commissioned consumer research to explore how people are spending their leisure time, from travel and events to entertainment experiences.

The findings offer some genuinely interesting insights into the opportunities and challenges facing Pennsylvania’s tourism economy in 2026.

Key Findings

  • More than half of Pennsylvanians plan to travel this spring and summer, with many opting for destinations outside the state
  • 42% say cheaper trips would make them more likely to travel within Pennsylvania
  • Travel costs are the biggest concern for residents (34%), followed by gas prices (23%)
  • Nine in ten Pennsylvanians say supporting local businesses is important when travelling within the state
  • 56% believe Pennsylvania is an underrated travel destination
  • 58% plan to take summer vacations outside of Pennsylvania
  • Lakes, small towns, and entertainment destinations are among the most appealing in-state trips
  • Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Gettysburg rank as the most popular cities for leisure travel within Pennsylvania
  • Word-of-mouth is the top source of travel inspiration, ahead of social media (46%)
  • Younger Pennsylvanians are more likely than older residents to travel out of state

Travel Costs Could Determine Whether Tourism Dollars Stay in Pennsylvania

Affordability is shaping travel decisions across the state. When asked about the biggest factor influencing travel, 34% of Pennsylvania residents said the cost of travel is their biggest concern, while rising gas prices weighed on an additional 23% of respondents. These concerns are consistent across age and income segments.

As a result, many residents say lower costs could encourage them to explore destinations closer to home. 42% say cheaper trips would make them more likely to travel within Pennsylvania rather than out of state.

For local tourism destinations, this suggests pricing and accessible travel options may play a key role in attracting visitors this year.

Residents Want to Support Local Businesses While Travelling

The commitment to shopping and eating local travels with Pennsylvanians wherever they go. As such, supporting local businesses remains a strong priority for many travelers.

Nine in 10 Pennsylvanians say supporting local businesses is important when traveling within the state, with 47% saying it is very important and 45% saying it is somewhat important.

Day trips in particular could provide a meaningful boost to local economies. Most residents report spending between $50 and $200 on a typical day trip, with that spending often going toward restaurants, shops, and local attractions.

For small towns and regional destinations, that’s a compelling reason to position themselves as accessible and affordable day trip options.

Pennsylvania Is Seen as an Underrated Travel Destination

Many residents believe Pennsylvania offers more travel opportunities than it often receives credit for.

According to the survey, 56% of residents say Pennsylvania is an underrated travel destination.

However, this perception does not always translate into travel plans. While Pennsylvania is one of America’s best feel-good summer cities, nearly 58% of residents say they plan to take summer vacations outside the state, highlighting a gap between perception and behavior.

The Most Popular In-State Travel Destinations

Among those planning trips within Pennsylvania, several destinations stand out as the most popular.

The survey found the top cities for leisure travel include:

  • Philadelphia
  • Lancaster
  • Gettysburg

Travel preferences vary by age group. Younger adults are more likely to favor urban destinations like Philadelphia, while older residents tend to prefer historically significant locations such as Gettysburg or smaller destinations like Lancaster.

What Types of In-State Trips Appeal Most to Residents?

When it comes to travel experiences within Pennsylvania, residents are particularly drawn to:

These preferences suggest travelers are looking for a mix of relaxation, nature, and entertainment when exploring destinations within the state.

Events and Festivals Could Drive In-State Tourism

Major events and festivals may also play an important role in encouraging local travel. The survey found that 40% of residents say that major events and festivals encourage them to travel within Pennsylvania, suggesting that more seasonal entertainment could help attract visitors to local destinations.

A Generational Divide in Travel Habits

The research also highlights differences in travel behavior between age groups. Younger Pennsylvanians are more likely to travel outside the state for vacations, while older residents are more likely to explore destinations within Pennsylvania.

This generational divide could present a challenge for the state’s tourism industry as it looks to retain younger travelers.
