Picture this: You’ve just won the lottery. Your bank account is about to explode with more zeros than you can count, and the possibilities are endless. What’s the first thing you do? Do you pay off those pesky debts, splurge on a dream house, or maybe finally take that trip around the world?

We were curious to know (and see) how lottery winners would spend their prize money across the country. What purchases would Americans prioritize, and what would those purchases look like? We surveyed the nation to see how each state would handle their newfound fortune — read on to see if you agree with your home state’s choices.

Methodology

In 2024, we surveyed 2,218 Americans from every state about what they would spend their lottery winnings on if they hit the jackpot! We questioned what their new home, car, and boat would look like along with travel plans and more. Additionally, we then turned to an AI image generator to accurately depict what these stunning new items would look like.

It’s worth noting that due to their lower populations, we did not receive enough responses from Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming to include.

What Would Americans Do After Winning the Lottery?

Sharing isn’t always caring when it comes to lottery winnings. A solid 65% of Americans would opt to keep their windfall to themselves. If they were to share, it would go in this order: themselves first, then family, and lastly, friends.

When it comes to splurging with their newfound wealth, Americans have their eyes set on the prize: a new house. A whopping 78% of people said they’d snag a new crib first. If we’re talking specifics, a luxury mountain home is the top pick for 16.6%, though modern homes and beach houses are also popular picks across the board.

But real estate isn’t the only priority. Next on the list is paying off debt, a practical choice for the 77% of American households with some type of debt. And who can resist a bit of globe-trotting? The third priority is jet-setting around the world with their winnings. Half of the wanderlust would go to Europe, followed by Asia and Australia.

For those that would splurge on a car, 22.9% would opt for a nice SUV. Just 5.6% would purchase a luxury sports car — though men are three times more likely to share this dream than women.
