There’s nothing quite like settling down with a good book on a late Sunday afternoon, the sun setting on the western horizon and your drink of choice on the table next to you. Except maybe hitting the jackpot in your next game of online poker

But let’s not digress, it’s books that are the order of the day as we celebrate World Book Day this month, and we’ve got the details on some of this year’s bestsellers across several genres, including mystery, young adult, and business. We’ve even thrown in two books to help you implement a more effective online poker tournament strategy for the next time you log on to play poker online.

The who-dun-its

Let’s start with two of what promise to be exciting books in the murder-mystery genre, The Maid by Nita Prose and The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart. While the two are very different books, both are destined to captivate the imagination as you follow the lives of the protagonists.

The Maid is the story of Molly Gray – a young woman whose life is suddenly turned upside down by two tragic events. One is the passing of her grandmother whom she leaned on for all things to do with life. The second is her discovery of a body in a room at the hotel she works at as a maid. Not only is Molly in mourning, but she is also the main suspect in the now very serious murder case at the Regency Grand Hotel.

Sci-fi meets murder mystery in The Paradox Hotel, where January Cole is in charge of security. The hotel is a halfway station for rich tourists wishing to go back in time. A sudden snowstorm hits, leaving the guests stranded and January on the hunt for a killer. The biggest challenge that January faces, though, is that only he can see the body of the deceased.

Looking for less murder, more drama?

If this is so, then perhaps you should check out The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. Considered a New York Times bestseller and a modern literary classic, this book follows the life of Frida Liu, a not-so-perfect woman, and her struggle to become the perfect mother. Set at a time when the government keeps a stringent watch on mothers, waiting for them to fail, The School for Good Mothers focuses on “the perils of perfect upper-middle-class parenting; the violence enacted upon women by both the state and, at times, one another; the systems that separate families; and the boundlessness of love.” It might be a good idea to have a box of tissues on hand for this one.

Need something for your teen?

Navdeep Singh Dhillon has you covered here. Dhillon’s Sunny G’s Series of Rash Decisions is the coming-of-age story of a young Sikh boy who decides to radically alter his life following the death of his brother. This is triggered by the discovery of a notebook his brother left to him. Sunny starts by ditching the turban, shaving the beard, cutting his hair, and attending the Prom… alone. At the other end of the scale is Miindi Vang, who is already making rash decisions of her own, such as stealing Sunny’s notebook. And in an instant, Sunny’s night becomes one filled with rash decisions, romance, excitement, and more as he races off to get his notebook back.

What’s big in business these days?

Life has changed, and so has the way we do business. The internet has evolved, many more online transactions are taking place, and since Covid, many people have found themselves moving towards entrepreneurship. But just how do we make sense of it all? Well, here are two books that could help you.

The metaverse has hit us, with some forward thinkers like Mark Zuckerberg already capitalizing on this, while others may need a push in that direction. If this is you, then Matthew Ball has just the book you need. The Metaverse: And How it Will Revolutionize Everything unpacks what is being hailed as the next iteration of the internet. According to Ball, the metaverse is a “persistent and interconnected network of 3D virtual worlds that will eventually serve as the gateway to most online experiences, and change the way we do business.”

In addition to explaining what the metaverse is, Ball also unpacks Web3, blockchains, and NFTs (that’s “non-fungible tokens if you didn’t know) in the scope of the metaverse and how our lives will change as a result of this new technology.

With Covid-19 came a whole new move to self-employment to millions around the world. But while some may have found it easy to jump into entrepreneurship, others have struggled. Dan Warshay, founding executive director of Brown University’s Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, has a solution for those in the latter group, and some tips and hints for those in the former. His book, See, Solve, Scale: How Anyone Can Turn an Unsolved Problem into a Breakthrough Success is geared towards ensuring that anyone can become a successful businessperson.

Warshay busts myths, sets out empowerment protocols, and guides start-up beginners through a three-step success program. It’s the book you really need to be successful from the start.

Bring the heat to your poker game

And what is life without a little flutter here and there, especially if you don’t have to leave the comfort of your chair to find the best online poker sites? That’s why we’re highlighting two of this year’s best strategy books, whether you’re playing at home with your friends, or looking for the best online poker in the USA.

Before you log in to your favorite site and play poker online, check out the Poker Workbook: Math & Preflop. Authored by James “SplitSuit” Sweeney, the book helps players understand the math behind the world’s favorite card game, including concepts such as pot odds, implied odds and combos, expected value, 3betting, and preflop all-ins. Once you’ve mastered the theory, you can also practice what Sweeney has taught before placing your bets. According to Amazon, this book is “over 200 pages, has 1,500+ questions, and includes a full answer key so you can ensure you got everything correct.”

With so many different types of online poker tournaments available to join, it seems only right that you learn as much as possible. Hank Cashman’s The Poker Book: The Rules, The Games, The Lingo is an excellent resource for this. You can pick up some good poker tournament tips and also learn to use the correct terminology before hitting the tables.
