From blockbuster movie releases and chart-topping albums to headline-making relationships and viral moments, America’s biggest celebrities compete for one thing above all else: attention. But who truly dominated the cultural conversation in 2026?
To find out, BetMGM Casino created the Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index, analyzing more than 6.6 million media mentions across 100 celebrities alongside Google search demand and Wikipedia page views to identify which celebrities in our study demonstrated the highest levels of combined media visibility and public interest. The results highlight not only the nation’s most talked-about stars, but also the difference between celebrities driven by media exposure and those fuelled by public interest.
BetMGM also went a step further to understand which US states have had the highest interest in celebrities so far this year and to discover each state’s favorite celeb.

A Closer Look at the Top 5 Celebrities
Key Findings
1. Media Coverage and Public Interest Don’t Always Go Hand in Hand
The analysis reveals that media visibility doesn’t always translate into public curiosity. While personalities such as Jimmy Fallon (94%), Stephen Colbert (87%), and Jimmy Kimmel (85%) derive the vast majority of their visibility from traditional media coverage, celebrities including Kai Cenat (97%), Simone Biles (93%), Sydney Sweeney (83%), and Jenna Ortega (93%) are driven overwhelmingly by audience demand.
2. Sydney Sweeney Is America’s Most Searched Celebrity
Despite receiving below-average podcast and broadcast coverage, Sydney Sweeney attracted the highest monthly Google search volume of any celebrity in the index, surpassing even Taylor Swift. Top 5 Most Culturally Significant Celebrities
1.Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift topped the Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index thanks to her unmatched ability to dominate both media coverage and public attention. This is no doubt a part of the “Taylor Swift Effect”, a trend which highlights her cultural and economic impact on various aspects of society. Already one of the world’s biggest music stars for nearly two decades, Swift remained at the center of popular culture throughout 2026, with her marriage to NFL star Travis Kelce becoming one of the year’s biggest entertainment stories. Combined with her enduring global fanbase, continued music success and influence across entertainment, fashion and sport, she generated more media coverage than any other celebrity analyzed.
Across 100 of America’s biggest celebrities, she got nearly 5x the average monthly Google search volume. She also received more than 5x the average number of podcast mentions, over 6x the average number of broadcast mentions, and almost 10x the average number of online news headlines.
2. Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson’s second-place ranking demonstrates the enduring power of his cultural legacy. Nearly two decades after his death, the King of Pop continues to command extraordinary public interest through his music, influence on modern artists, and lasting impact on popular culture. The release of the blockbuster biopic “Michael”, starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson, helped introduce his story to a new generation while reigniting global interest in his life and career.
With almost two-thirds of his Cultural Visibility Index score driven by public interest rather than media coverage, Jackson remains one of the few artists whose relevance transcends generations. In 2026 alone, he was referenced more than 115,000x across U.S. TV and radio – more than twice the average celebrity analyzed – received over 12,300 podcast mentions, more than 3x the average, and attracted around 840,000 monthly Wikipedia page views, the second-highest of any celebrity in the index.
3. LeBron James
LeBron James ranked third in the Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index, underlining his status as one of the most influential athletes in the world. Beyond his achievements on the basketball court, LeBron has become a global cultural figure through his business ventures, philanthropy, and influence across sport, entertainment, and media.
His sustained visibility throughout 2026 helped cement his place among America’s most talked-about public figures. He was the fourth most-mentioned celebrity across podcasts, with almost 17,000 references, the fifth most-mentioned across U.S. broadcast TV and radio with more than 210,000 mentions, and generated the second-highest number of digital news headlines in the country (84,754, more than seven times the average celebrity analyzed), behind only Taylor Swift.
He also remained one of America’s most searched-for celebrities, attracting around 1.6 million Google searches each month.
4. Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny ranked fourth, cementing his place as one of America’s most influential musicians. The Puerto Rican superstar’s cultural visibility reached new heights in 2026 after becoming the first artist to headline a Super Bowl halftime show performed predominantly in Spanish, bringing Latin culture to one of the world’s biggest television audiences.
Combined with his Grammy-winning success, global tour, and continued dominance of Latin music, Bad Bunny remained one of the most talked-about entertainers in the U.S., demonstrating how Spanish-language artists are increasingly shaping mainstream American culture. The data reflects that influence: he attracted around 1.7 million Google searches each month, ranked as the third most-mentioned celebrity across U.S. broadcast TV and radio with more than 256,000 references, and generated over 43,500 digital news headlines throughout the year.
5. Sydney Sweeney
Sydney Sweeney ranked fifth, highlighting her rapid rise as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. The success of “The Housemaid”, alongside high-profile brand campaigns, and continued interest in her personal life and career, helped make her the most Googled celebrity in the index, attracting an average of 4.6 million monthly U.S. searches (around 50% more than Taylor Swift). Unlike many of the other celebrities in the top 10, Sweeney’s visibility was driven overwhelmingly by public interest rather than media coverage. Despite receiving fewer-than-average podcast mentions (around 2,300) and broadcast references (30,565), she generated almost 16,000 online news headlines and attracted more than 264,000 monthly Wikipedia page views, demonstrating that audiences were actively searching for her rather than simply encountering her in the media.

America’s Favorite Celebrities by State
While no single celebrity dominated every region, Kevin Hart emerged as the most geographically popular celebrity, topping search interest in five U.S. states – more than any other celebrity analyzed.
Drew Barrymore ranked second, leading search interest in three states, while Ed Sheeran, Kanye West, MrBeast, and Simone Biles each topped two states.
Interestingly, despite ranking No. 1 nationally in the Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index, Taylor Swift was the most searched celebrity in just one state (Rhode Island). This suggests that while Swift enjoys consistently high levels of attention across the country, other celebrities generate stronger regional peaks in search interest.

Methodology
The Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index is a data-led measure of cultural visibility among a curated selection of America’s best-known celebrities. Rather than relying on a single indicator of fame, the index combines multiple measures of media visibility and public interest to provide a broader view of which celebrities captured the greatest share of attention during the study period.
The index combines two equally weighted dimensions:
- Media Visibility (50%): Based on normalized podcast mentions, broadcast (TV and radio) mentions, and digital news headlines between January 1, 2026 and August 1, 2026.
- Public Interest (50%): Based on normalized Google search demand and Wikipedia page views over the same period.
Each of the five underlying metrics was independently normalized to a 0–100 scale using min-max normalization. The Media Visibility and Public Interest scores were then weighted equally to produce each celebrity’s final Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index score.
Data was collected using third-party media monitoring and audience intelligence platforms covering U.S. media and search behavior.
Scope
The study compares a curated selection of 100 prominent U.S. entertainment and sports personalities spanning music, film, television, comedy, sport, reality TV, and digital creators. The cohort was selected to reflect a broad cross-section of contemporary popular culture and is intended for comparison within the group rather than as an exhaustive ranking of every public figure.
Limitations
The Celebrity Cultural Visibility Index measures cultural visibility and public attention, rather than influence, impact, popularity or public sentiment.
The findings are limited to the celebrities included in the study and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive ranking of all public figures. The index doesn’t include politicians, business leaders, or other non-entertainment personalities, whose media dynamics differ substantially from those of celebrities in popular culture.
The index isn’t intended to measure endorsement effectiveness, commercial value, or social media influence, each of which requires additional indicators beyond the scope of this study.
While the methodology combines multiple indicators of media visibility and public interest to provide a more holistic view than any single metric alone, cultural significance remains a complex concept that cannot be fully captured through quantitative measures.
