From household goods to appliances, Americans have become very familiar with prices in our everyday lives. That’s precisely why the long-standing game show, “The Price Is Right,” has been so successful and enjoyed by generations. Simply being an everyday shopper qualifies anyone as the ideal candidate to play the game. Keeping this in mind, we decided to bring the game directly to the hands of Americans nationwide and determine where the most skilled players reside.

Tune in or set your DVR as we attempt the role of Drew Carey or the late, great Bob Barker in our mock “The Price Is Right” match-up of every U.S. state.

To begin, we start our experiment similarly as we would see in the game show: bring up the players for the One Bid round! In this case, every state across America is at the podium and ready to make their best guesses without going over. Let’s see how they did.

From mere pennies to dollars, the competition was fierce! As we zoom in on the results, we see some remarkable price accuracy from states all across the country. North Carolina stands out as having the closest guess to the actual retail price of any product analyzed. With an average guess just 14 cents shy, they had the most accurate estimate for the price of a commonly purchased fabric softener.

Jumping to the opposite coast, Oregon was the winner for the mountain bike round. With its many trails and avid outdoorsmen, it was no challenge for the locals to guess the price of a top-tier mountain bike. At an actual retail price of $498, Oregon was the closest without going over with an average guess of $477.02, just shy of $20.98.
Continuing down the West Coast, California is the victor for the men’s deodorant round. As the state with seemingly the least “B.O.,” Californians had no trouble knowing the price of a common men’s deodorant, missing the actual retail price by just 47 cents.

These states, among others, demonstrate not only their knowledge of market prices but also their ability to navigate the nuances of retail pricing with impressive accuracy. Though they shined during specific rounds, that did not guarantee we would see them in the Showcase Showdown. Let’s continue and discover which states were the best overall and the ones going home with the most cash and prizes.

Surprising all contenders, New Hampshire clinched the number one spot overall. Despite not securing the top guess for any specific product, they managed to hover around the top in multiple rounds. For example, their razor-sharp estimation skills were evident when they came within a mere penny of claiming the top spot in the toilet paper round.

Coming in at number four, Florida was able to rise to the top of the leaderboard. As one of the few states that managed to never “go over” (guess higher than the retail price) in any round, the Sunshine State rightfully clinched a spot in the top ten.

Demonstrating remarkable consistency, California proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Not only did they dominate in the men’s deodorant round, but they also secured the fourth-best answer in the toilet paper round, earning them a well-deserved spot at number six overall.

A round of applause for the states that emerged victorious. It goes to show that anyone can play “The Price Is Right,” and you don’t have to be anything beyond just a typical shopper.

Methodology

In April of 2024, we surveyed 2,220 Americans from every state using “The Price Is Right” style questions (specifically the One Bid round) to know which states were the best and worst at “The Price Is Right.” Survey takers had to guess the price of a common household good as close as they could without going over. We found the average price guess by state and then created an index to determine which state was best and worst. We did this by evenly weighting each question to give every state analyzed a score out of 50 (1 being low and 50 being a perfect score) based on their results. It’s worth noting that due to their lower populations, we did not receive enough responses from Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming to include.
