The creative impulse is one of humanity’s oldest and strongest drives. From the earliest days, the urge to create has driven people from all cultures to create artworks that express our deepest feelings, desires and aspirations. You don’t have to be an artist to understand this. Many a game of online poker has been won because the winning player tapped into their creative instincts to perceive an underlying pattern of play. Even driving has been compared to the creative act because you’re processing information in the same way artists do.

In a sense, everything around you can be turned into art. One of the best ways to realize this is to visit art installations. When the majority of the space around you is part of the artwork, you become part of the art. For your inspiration, here are some of the best art installations from across the US. Read on!

Otherworld

From the outside, Otherworld is a solitary futuristic building in a desolate plaza of abandoned storefronts. Step inside and you’re transported to another reality that’s part art museum, part spaceship and part escape room. Located at 5819 Chantry Drive, Columbus, Ohio, Otherworld consists of 40 rooms of art displays and interactive features for you to explore. A science-fiction storyline guides you as you make your way from one room to the next. There’s an infinite mirror room with LED tube lights, a room filled with massive, fuzzy monsters, and a retro arcade room where you have to zap video-game villains with blasters. It’s just like playing monster-themed online casino games such as the Wild Worlds online slot. Sometimes you have to solve a puzzle to activate a display. It all adds up to hours of immersive entertainment. All in all, Otherworld is like nothing else in Ohio!

Holographic Entities Reminding of the Universe

Visitors to the new Uber Campus in Mission Bay, San Francisco, are greeted by an otherworldly spectacle that’s perfectly in keeping with the company’s disruptive ethos. Masako Miki’s Holographic Entities Reminding of the Universe consists of nine larger-than-life outdoor art installations based on the Japanese concept of “tsukumogami yōkai.” According to Shinto belief, they are inanimate objects that receive a soul after serving their owners for 100 years. At that point, they become alive and self-aware, with the spooky ability to shift from one shape to another. They also love to play pranks on human beings! Miki’s bronze yōkai sculptures comment on nonbinary spaces, biracial identities and the artist’s experience as a Japanese immigrant woman between two cultures.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Back in the 1960s, artist Isaiah Zagar started tiling his favorite neighborhood, Philadelphia’s South Street, constructing a space out of cement, bottles, ceramic shards, bicycle spokes and other odds and ends. He never stopped. Today, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens complex consists of half a city block’s worth of indoor and outdoor space. The tiled passages take you overground, underground and through the mind of an extraordinary artist. The Magic Gardens are considered to be the gateway to Philadelphia’s historic South Street Renaissance and the perfect introduction to Zagar’s incredible work. More of his visionary work is on display at Eye’s Gallery at 402 South Street.

Seven Magic Mountains

Las Vegas is world-famous for its incredible hotels, restaurants, shows and casino table games, but it’s also home to a vibrant art scene. One of the biggest success stories of Las Vegas art in recent years is Seven Magic Mountains. Created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, this enormous public art installation is located within the Ivanpah Valley, near Jean Dry Lake and Interstate 15, about 10 miles south of Sin City.

Rondinone stacked colorful boulders to build seven towers more than 30 feet high, creating an explosion of form and color in the Mojave Desert. Produced by the Nevada Museum of Art and Art Production Fund, Seven Magic Mountains opened on May 11, 2016, and was originally scheduled to be taken down after two years, but popular demand has kept the installation open for viewing for the foreseeable future.

Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden

With its exceptional music, food and friendly people, New Orleans is a cultural destination of note. If you’re visiting the Big Easy, be sure to visit the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, home to more than 80 world-class modern and contemporary sculptures set in 11 acres of natural surrounds, including hundreds of trees, palmettos and shrubs. Explore along meandering footpaths, reflecting lagoons and 200-year-old live oaks as you become part of a landscape studded with works by celebrated artists such as Henry Moore, René Magritte and Pierre-August Renoir, among many others. Kids will be intrigued by Frank Gehry’s playful “Bear with Us,” a life-size metal bear, as well as Louise Bourgeois’s giant spiders and a dazzling spiral mirror maze by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. Entrance is free and the garden’s open seven days a week.
