Whether or not you’re a fan of casino table games or jackpot slots, you’ve undoubtedly heard about the roulette casino game, a game that continues to grow in popularity as the years pass. The game offers a range of odds that appeal to first-time gamblers and experienced players alike. Through roulette’s long history, the wheel itself underwent an impressive evolution before becoming the glossy, fast-spinning version we know today.

Discover the unlikely origins of the roulette wheel and witness the evolution of what’s now one of the most popular online casino games in the world.

Origins of Roulette

Roulette was invented in Europe, and like many gambling games, came about from combining the game mechanics of other preexisting games. The history of roulette has taken several twists and turns as the rules were formalized over several centuries. Even players who know everything there is to know about roulette strategy may not know the origins of the game.

The Popularity of Lotto and Cavagnole

Early predecessors of roulette didn’t use a wheel but did include a betting table with numbers. Lotto was an informal gambling game played across Europe in the 1500s. According to the Visit Naples article “Naples, the capital of Lotto!”, the lotto arrived in Naples around the 1680s, where it took off in popularity.

Later, games such as Cavagnole in France (also known as Biribi in Italy) were commonly seen in gambling houses. These games involved wagering on which numbered ticket would be drawn from a bag. The famous playboy Casanova wrote about when he received a huge payout from playing Cavagnole in Genoa during the 1760s.

What both Lotto and Cavagnole were lacking was a reliable way to randomly determine winning numbers.

Pascal and the Roulette Wheel

It’s believed that around the same time in the 1640’s, a Frenchman named Blaise Pascal was attempting to develop a perpetual motion machine. While he failed to create a perpetual motion device, his work wouldn’t go to waste. Possibly as a result of these experiments, the roulette wheel would eventually be born.

The Development of Modern Roulette

One of the first ways to play roulette at a casino was in the form of Even-Odd, or EO. According to the article “The Game of EO” in The Sporting Magazine, published in 1793, players wagered on whether a ball tossed into a spinning wheel would land in an even- or odd-numbered pocket, with 40 pockets being the typical number.

The first named reference to “Roulette” comes from 1790s Paris, where everyone was eagerly playing roulette, including in the royal palace. Here, the roulette wheel had the modern array of numbers from one to 36, plus both a zero and a double zero pocket.

A final development was made by twin brothers François and Louis Blanc, two Frenchmen working in Bad Homburg, a German resort town. François had the idea to eliminate the double zero in order to draw in more players. And so the modern form of European roulette was invented. Later, François would go on to establish the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco, while players were left with the choice between playing American or European roulette.

Why Roulette Is One of the World’s Most Popular Casino Games

Now that you know more about the invention of roulette, you’ve played a few games, and you’ve brushed up on your strategy and roulette lingo, you’re probably wondering how it’s possible that the popularity of roulette remains at an all-time high. Here are just a few reasons that roulette remains a popular game:

Anticipation

The anticipation that comes with every spin of the roulette wheel is thrilling for many players. While online roulette variants could spit out a result in the blink of an eye, dramatic animations are used to make sure this sense of anticipation carries over from the real-life wheel. Live dealer roulette is also popular because it carries over the suspense of the real roulette wheel.

Simplicity

Roulette rules are easy to understand. There aren’t any complicated strategies or rules to learn. All you need to do is place your bets on the table and then watch the wheel spin. This simplicity makes the game accessible to everyone, regardless of their experience level.

Impressive Payouts

When betting on roulette odds, you could win up to 35x your wager. This makes the game incredibly attractive to players who are looking for a chance to win big. However, the exact value of roulette payouts depends on the type of bet you place, with lower-risk wagers offering much lower prizes.

How To Improve Your Win Rate When Playing Roulette

Looking to win more often when playing roulette? Unfortunately, roulette is a game of pure chance, which means that there isn’t a surefire way to improve your odds of winning.

However, a popular strategy is the Martingale system, which requires you to double your bet after every loss. Alternatively, you can bet on multiple numbers at once, rather than just one or two. This increases your chances of winning but also reduces the size of your potential payout.

But in the end, careful bankroll management is the best roulette strategy. Set a limit for how much you want (and can afford) to spend and stick to it.

Why Play Roulette Online?

Playing roulette online offers several advantages over playing in a land-based casino.

Firstly, online casinos are accessible from anywhere, so you can play your favorite games from the comfort of your own home. This convenience is particularly appealing if you live far away from a traditional casino or you have a busy schedule.

Another advantage of playing online roulette is the wide variety of games available. Most online casinos offer many different spin-offs and variations of the game, including European, American, and French roulette.

Do you love the excitement of playing roulette on the casino floor? Then live dealer roulette is the version for you. This is an online variation of the game in which you play with a live dealer who spins the wheel in real time. It gives you a more immersive, realistic experience than playing against a computer.
